Dream While Awake!

The Orient Fascinates the West!

Men and women of the early 20th century were immersed in the colonial epic. Pierre Juppet built a minaret at Bagatelle; the stained-glass window of the staircase transports us to Egypt, and the paintings to Constantinople or Venice. The Oriental Room offers you an exceptional "Bonk el koba", an Algerian domed bed.
One climbs into this "fairy bed", fully restored, via a footstool.

Your Room: 30 m², South and WestFacing

A domed bed and an Art Deco inspired bathroom.

Private entrance vestibule and separate toilet.
The Oriental Room is captivating, with its red, beige, and gold hues. The walls, covered in jacquard fabric, play with the old rose silk brocade of the curtains; the woodwork is painted with linseed oil. Come and rest, lulled by the rustling trees and the sunlight reflecting off the polished brass. The floor is a herringbone parquet of solid oak, waxed with beeswax; the fireplace is made of red and grey marble with a brass surround. The windows have frosted glass, offering views of the plane tree terrace to the south and the lime tree quincunx and green carpet to the west. You are in what was once Monsieur Pierre Juppet’s room, the builder of the house.

Villa Bagatelle, listed as a Historic Monument, is one of the very first Hotel-Museums. After five years of restoration, it has regained its 1900s charm and vibrancy. As many elements as possible have been repaired, upcycled, or sometimes rebuilt using materials and techniques as close to the originals as possible.

The Bedding:

An astonishing and exceptional Bonk el koba, equipped with a high-comfort mattress measuring 175 x 210 cm. It is accessed via a footstool. Inside, there are two suspended bedside lamps, controlled by a wooden pear switch, and two sockets for charging phones to be placed in a woven basket. This bed is dressed in new high-end bedding made in France.

THE FIRST OF YOUR ONE THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS

Bonk el koba beds are rare in France. The only other known example is in the reserves of the Mucem in Marseille; two others are displayed in Algerian museums.

Otherwise, you would need to be invited into a home in the old Casbah district of Algiers or seize the exclusive privilege of a golden night at the Hotel-Museum of Villa Bagatelle.

A scientific notice in four languages is available in your room to discover the history and charm of this beautiful object.

The furniture and decoration:
Your room is furnished with authentic pieces dating from the late 19th or early 20th century: an Iranian copper lamp, a Turkish ceremonial shield, a Syrian table, a Black Virgin from Le Puy, and a pastel portrait.

Your Bathroom, West-Facing

The Art Deco inspired bathroom is tiled with handcrafted Zelliges. It is equipped with a bathtub/shower. The "Porcher" sink and taps, installed in the 1930s by Paulette and Robert, are identical to those on the Normandie ocean liner. The afternoon sun streams in through the large French window.

The "Paulette & Robert" breakfast (available for a supplement) is served on early 20th-century china, silverware, and table linen. It is complemented with fruit and cereals.

The "Express Business" breakfast is included in single-person room bookings.

Additional options: eggs, charcuterie, and cheese platters.

Living at Bagatelle

We have taken on the challenge of immersing you in a 1900-1920s world. As many elements as possible are original, sometimes rebuilt to closely match the original materials and techniques: reuse of old parquet floors, beeswax finishing, woodwork painted with linseed oil, vintage curtains, and museum-quality furniture. The original sanitary ware and taps have been restored. These objects and materials are often absent from our daily lives. Staying at Bagatelle for a few nights means allowing yourself to be surprised and ready to relearn the attitudes, gestures, and attentions of our grandparents.

FOR YOUR KIND ATTENTION

We kindly ask you to pay particular attention to the following:
DO NOT WET THE ROOM’S PARQUET FLOOR
by walking with wet feet after leaving the bathroom.
DO NOT WET THE HEADBOARD
with damp hair or by wrapping it in a turban-style bath towel.
Water removes the wax and damages the wood’s finish, which would then need to be re-patinated or restored.
DO NOT PLACE WET OR ICY GLASSES ON THE TABLES.
